BFG Collective Finds New Solution to the Space Problem

 

An indie theatre collaboration called BFG Collective is finding their own new solution to "the space problem". 

 

Just over a year ago, Gideon Productions was looking for a space for playwright Mac Rogers' new "Honeycomb" trilogy, and working with Boomerang Theatre Company and Flux Theatre Ensemble, they embarked on an innovative approach to theatre rental.

  • The Caffe Cino Fellowship Award, presented to an Off-Off-Broadway theatre company that consistently produces outstanding work. This award also includes a grant to be used toward an Off-Off-Broadway production.
  • The Stewardship Award, presented to an individual or organization demonstrating a significant contribution to the Off-Off-Broadway community through service, support and leadership.

THIRDS: A Show with a Mission 

IT Awards Update Editor, Doug Strassler spoke with Leigh Williams about the upcoming show Heiress Productions show Thirds, written by Jacob M. Appel, as well as the production company's own philanthropic mission. The play will open at the Lion Theatre on March 3.


DS: What is Thirds about?
LW: Thirds is about three sisters who inherit their mother's house and can't agree on what to do with it. The eldest and youngest both want the house and the middle sister is in the middle. The show begins with the youngest sister building a wall through her "third" of the house. Things really heat up when a former neighbor arrives to check out the house for herself. It's a wonderfully relatable family drama that will make you laugh.

  • Obama Administration Proposes Increase for NEA
    From Americans for the Arts: The Obama Administration has released the much anticipated FY 2013 budget request to Congress, which includes funding for the nation's cultural agencies and programs, such as the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Institute for Museums and Library Services (IMLS), and the Department of Education's Arts in Education program.   • Attorney General Releases Nonprofit Report
    From New York Council of Nonprofits (NYCON): New York State Attorney General Schneiderman unveiled a new plan on Thursday to reform and revitalize New York's nonprofit sector. The plan includes legislation to eliminate outdated and costly burdens on nonprofits, strengthen oversight and accountability, and reaffirm his office's commitment to policing fraud and abuse. THE NAVIGATOR

We LOVE it when awesome, innovative theatre lives beyond its initial run.  Especially when it is a show that made an impact our own community like The Navigator, produced by the acclaimed Workshop Theatre Company.

The Navigator, with only a $300 budget received nominations for Outstanding Production of a Play, Outstanding Original Full-Length Script (for playwright Eddie Antar), Outstanding Actress in a Featured Role (for Nicole Taylor), Outstanding Actress in a Lead Role (for Kelly Anne Burns), Outstanding Set Design (for Duane Pagano) and received the 2011 IT Awards for Outstanding Direction (Leslie Kincaid Burby) and Outstanding Lighting Design (Duane Pagano).

It is currently enjoying another run through March 3rd at the Workshop Theatre Company's Main Stage Theatre by most of the original creative team, including the director, Burby, as well as  and features Burns, Taylor, Franchini and Michael Gnat as well as sound design by Chiappetta and lighting by Duane Pagano.  Jen Varbalow designed the set.

In The Navagator, the hero "Dave" has fallen on hard times. He's out of work,
drowning in debt, and his wife is threatening to leave him. Then suddenly his car's navigation system starts giving him answers to questions beyond just the fastest way to get to the interstate.

The Navigator received a developmental Play in Process production in the Jewel Box Theater in 2010.

Director Leslie Kincaid Burby says about the show:  "Returning to work on The Navigator script, I am even more impressed by the tightness of the story and the humanity of the characters...I'm tremendously excited to be able to move The Navigator onto the mainstage this February...it is wonderful to have an actual budget this time around!"

On working in Indie Theatre:  "I love indie theatre because anything is possible in this world.  It's a place to play, without that
terrible need to take the safe, well-trodden roads in order to recreate predicable commercial success. It's a place were disturbing, juicy, inspiring work occurs, that I often find much more thought provoking and moving than the slickly predictable shows I see on Broadway and Off-Broadway."

The production is presented by the WorkShop Theater Company in their
Main Stage Theater (312 West 36th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues,

FRIGID New York 2012!
