 Focus on customer service.
We
all think that if we provide a great show, with a talented cast,
fantastic sets, interesting script and perfect costumes that our
audiences will be pleased. Perhaps they will, but push yourself to take
that enjoyment one step further. For example, the the cell theater offers wine before and after the show, or MTWorks provides homemade refreshments, or a smiling face greeting them at the door before and after the performance.
Think
about ways you can add-on to their night's experience... can you get a
local restaurant to offer a discount meal, can you send them home with a
free gift? In Danny Meyer's book, Setting the Table
he talks about the whole customer experience and not just the food at
his fine-dining establishments. We can learn something from
concentrating on the whole experience, from ease of ticket purchasing,
to a thank you for coming to a performance. Pay as close attention to
details off the stage as you do to what is on the stage to make a
lasting impression.

Our blog is so cool, it's like

- 2012 Nonprofit 'State of the Sector' Survey
From
the Arts & Business Council of New York: The Nonprofit Finance Fund
is conducting its fourth annual nationwide survey examining the current
state of the nonprofit sector from a financial perspective, and invites
you to add your voice. The survey, which is anonymous and takes only
10-15 minutes to fill out, collects data on important financial and
management issues facing the nonprofit sector. (View previous year's

Flux Theatre Ensemble

 There
is no better way to kick off 2012 than by spotlighting the 2011 Caffe
Cino Award recipient company Flux Theatre Ensemble, who is presenting
the world premier of Menders, opening on January 19th, directed by Heather Cohn (who was nominated in 2010 for her direction of Flux's The Lesser Seductions of History). Flux
is an ensemble-driven company who's mission is to produce
"transformative theatre that explores and awakens the capacity for
change" and advocates for long-term collaboration and development."
Since 2006 they have produced over 13 productions and have received
numerous accolades for their performances in New York (many of them from
their work in the International Fringe Festival). Over the past three
years, they have been nominated for 10 IT Awards for their productions
of The Angel Eaters Trilogy, The Lesser Seductions of History and Dog Act and received the award for Outstanding Sound Design. They are starting the year off with Erin Browne's Menders
which will run through February 11th at The Gym at Judson. Inspired by
Robert Frost's poem "Mending Wall", the play tells the story of Corey
and Aimes, new recruits to mending a wall that guards their city from an
unnamed threat. But as they are warned of the subversive world they are
supposedly defending themselves from, cracks form in their
protectionist philosophy and among themselves as a group. The Playwright, Erin Browne (a Brooklynite who works in TV documentaries) has written several full-length plays including A Meth Play, Coffee/Lovelorn, Devil to Pay, Hence, Menders, Narrator 1, Not As of Yet, Projects, Return, and Trying. Return
was a winner of the Hudson Valley Writers' Center Contest and has been
produced on Theater Row, the Bushwick Starr and a radio play version of
Trying was broadcast on BBC World Service. It also should be
noted that the Judson Memorial Church is one of the original pioneers of
the Off-Off-Broadway theatre movement, along with the famed Caffé Cino
and "The Gym" in which they are performing is actually a new theatre
space dedicated to rekindling Judson's role as a home for the
Off-Off-Broadway community. Fitting for the recipients of the 2011 Caffé
Cino Fellowship Award to christen the space as a new home for indie and
Off-Off-Broadway theatre! Congratulations to Flux and a happy
new year to them and to all the hard-working artists making new and
