Performing Art Space in the Hudson Rail Yards
As a direct result of Manhattan Community Board 4's working with The Related Companies, the NYC City Council and concerned members of the community, 16,000 sq. ft. of Cultural Performing Art Space will be created within the confines of the Hudson Yards Project, which was just officially announced by Mayor Bloomberg and Speaker Quinn.
What makes this cultural initiative a bit different is that the space will be divided up into smaller performance facilities throughout the huge site, which should allow small to mid-sized west side neighborhood non-profit performance and arts groups the opportunity to find a creative home in the confines of this spectacular new development project.
Speaker Quinn said "Soon, thousands of New Yorkers will have the opportunity for new affordable housing and cultural space right in their neighborhoods."
(The selection process for this part of the initiative is still years away and criteria for participation has not yet been established.)
As mentioned, this is a long term project, and the entire site will not be completed until the end of this decade. But it was very important that the cultural usage request for the 16,000 sq. ft. was placed in the restrictive deed (and it was) - as it is that document which will govern the development of the Hudson Yards Project and which will mandate that these theater spaces are actually built.

Also, please look forward to further news coming from the Community Boards shortly regarding arts related issues.
David M. Pincus is the Chair of the Theater Task Force for Manhattan Community Board 4.
